Jamaica Memories

A project by artist Linda Ganjian for Jamaica Flux 2021,
organized by the Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning,
in collaboration with Queens Memory.

Through Jamaica Memories, I engaged the local architectural history of Jamaica, Queens through the experience of its residents. My project combined quotes and personal histories with drawings of significant neighborhood sites, as well as quotidian architecture that was vulnerable to redevelopment in an era of massive rezoning and change. Through community interviews that discussed memories of favorite buildings and sites, I created a series of 24 free, publicly available postcards. The racks were placed at Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning (JCAL), King Manor Museum, and Queens Public Library on Merrick Boulevard. In addition, the ten interviews I conducted became part of the Queens Memory archive at the Queens Public Library.

This project was part of Jamaica Flux: Workspaces & Windows 2021 organized by JCAL with support from the National Endowment for the Arts, Resorts World New York, and the Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation. This project was also made possible in part by: the Queens Council on the Arts, with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council; and the 2021 New York City Art Corps program.
